Cheney Summer Hawks AA

The Cheney Summer Hawks exited AA American Legion district play July 17 following opening round losses to the NWC Crusaders 12-7 and the Asotin County Blues 15-4.

NWC broke a 6-all tie with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Dawes Hansen had a 4-for-4 day at the plate, driving in a pair. Jace Vega and TJ Weindeman each had two hits.

Asotin had a 10-run lead, scoring six in the second, in the elimination game. Tank Best had a pair of hits and Kaiden Rasmussen two RBIs for the Summer Hawks.

“I am proud of how the young men played this season,” head coach Ozzie Smith wrote in a text message. “The goal of Legion Ball is development, and I saw a lot of growth in our guys. It was a pleasure coaching them.”

The team finished 7-8.

The season came to a swift end for the Cheney Summer Hawks A team in American Legion district playoffs on July 17 with losses to Kettle Falls, 11-1 and Northern Lakes 15-0.

“I am very proud of these young man who played their butts off and some very hot temps,” Beamer wrote in an email.

C. Gerard had the only Cheney hit, a double against Kettle Falls which scored five runs in the first and four more in the second.

Matthew Junkin not only went 3-for-3 at the plate but added three innings of ultimately a no-hitter for Northern Lights.

Cheney finished the season 10-11, prompting Beamer to add, “I did see a lot of growth from everyone and really that is the important thing.”
