City considers opting out of public records index

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — The Airway Heights City Council conducted the first reading of Ordinance C-1031, which proposes opting out of maintaining a public records index, at the July 18 meeting.

Mr. Daniel A. Gibbons, city attorney, explained that state law requires cities to keep a records index, but they can opt out if it poses an undue burden.

“There are budgetary restrictions,” Mr. Gibbons explained, mentioning that city budgetary funds are not sufficient, and that there are not enough city employees to index all records.

The council moved the ordinance forward for further consideration.
