Major crimes increase in Medical Lake according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s office. The rate has increased from 227 between January to June 2013 to 269 between the same period in 2014.
Eastern Washington University wins a $2 million federal grant designed to support students from migrant and seasonal farm worker backgrounds during their first year in college.
The Cheney Planning Commission resumes its municipal code review process by taking a look at both Chapter 22 – Subdivisions and Title and Chapter 23 – Development Code Administration at their July meeting.

A 22-year-old Cheney woman reported she was raped in her residence by an unknown assailant armed with a pistol. The woman had no recollection of the incident as she lost consciousness.
Dino Rossi, Republican, made a stop in Cheney to promote his run for Washington state governor. He later won the first two recounts, but loss on the third recount and the election.
Mike Henry, a graduate of White Swan High School and Central Washington University – and a member of the Wildcats 1995 national championship team – was named as the new head football coach at Medical Lake High School. Henry replaced John Giannandrea who retired after 24 years on the job.

Despite overwhelming opposition from members of the community during public testimony, the Medical Lake Planning Commission voted 2-1 to allow the Fox Hollow housing development to move forward.
The Medical Lake School District began moving forward with a new elementary school now that $2.9 million in state matching funds had been approved.
The Cheney II Junior American Legion team improved its record to 18-2 by winning five of their last six games.

A 37-year-old Texas man, Edward Weathersby, died at a Spokane hospital from injuries suffered when he was crushed against the side of a truck by an elephant from the Fords Brothers Circus that had been performing in Cheney.
A spaghetti dinner featuring chef Tony Carpine was scheduled to help raise funds to support the Cheney community float.
At a meeting in Chicago, the NCAA approved Eastern Washington University’s request to reclassify their football program from Division II to Division I for the upcoming season. It’s a move that helped the school move a step closer to possible membership in the Big Sky Conference.

July 25, 1974
The Cheney City Council approved the drilling of a fifth municipal water well, funding the project through increases in city utility rates.
With construction of two Circle K stores nearing completion in Cheney, it was expected that city would also see a new 7-Eleven built as well.
Should an iron-workers’ strike continue much longer it could bring a halt to construction of the new Special Events Pavilion at Eastern.
