Fireworks Ban in Cheney

Law enforcement will be on patrol

CHENEY - As today is Independence Day, residents of Cheney are reminded that the use of fireworks within city limits is strictly prohibited.

According to the city municipal code, the personal use of any fireworks that produce noise including sparklers, or have the potential to cause a fire is a misdemeanor offense.

Additionally, the sale of common fireworks within the incorporated areas of Cheney is also forbidden.

The only exception to this rule is for professional fireworks displays. Those interested in hosting such events must obtain a permit from the city and receive approval from the fire chief. This process is described as complex and thorough in the municipal code.

In a recent announcement on June 25, the Regional Fire Departments reiterated that "the sale and use of all amateur (consumer) fireworks are illegal in Cheney, Spokane, Spokane Valley, Millwood, Liberty Lake, and the unincorporated areas of Spokane County." This statement underscores the region's commitment to preventing fire hazards and ensuring public safety during the holiday season.

The fire departments also emphasized the importance of celebrating safely, advising residents to attend public fireworks displays organized by licensed pyrotechnicians. These events are designed to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for the community.

While most of Spokane County adheres to these stringent regulations, there are a few exceptions, such as Airway Heights and Medical Lake, where local municipal codes may differ. Residents in these areas should consult their local regulations to ensure compliance.

On today's holiday, the city and regional authorities are taking all necessary precautions to prevent fire-related incidents and ensure a safe celebration for all.

According to a recent reminder on June 25 from the Regional Fire Departments, “The sale and use of all amateur (consumer) fireworks are illegal in Cheney, Spokane, Spokane Valley, Millwood, Liberty Lake and the unincorporated areas of Spokane County.”

The area Fire Departments added, “We encourage everyone to celebrate the holiday safely by observing one of the area fireworks displays provided by licensed pyrotechnicians.”

Spokane County except for a few areas like Airway Heights and Medical Lake, according to the Airway Heights municipal code.
