A brush fire broke out on the west side of I-90 near Salnave overpass on July 9, leading to traffic restrictions in the westbound lanes at milepost 264, close to SR 902. The cause and exact time of the fire's ignition were unknown and still under investigation. The lane closure began at 5:28 p.m. and continued until 9 p.m.
Spokane County Fire Districts 3 and 10 quickly responded to the scene to contain and extinguish the fire. According to the fire district's Facebook page, the blaze covered three acres, consuming grass and timber. Firefighters reported that structures were potentially threatened and noted instances of tree torching and spot fires.
Crews worked to build containment lines to prevent the fire from spreading further and later conducted mop-up operations.
The Cheney Fire Department, the Department of natural resources, and Lincoln County Fire also assisted in extinguishing the fire. Additionally, the Washington State Patrol and the Washington State Department of Transportation provided support with traffic control.
