Cheney offers cost relief to utility bill

$200 offered to qualified applicants

CHENEY – The city qualifies for $267,640.83 in assistance for active residential utility customers who are either low- or moderately low-income.

City Niemeier, Finance Director, presented this resolution to the city council during their council meeting on June 25. She said, “If qualified, some of our utility customers may get $200.”

Washington State Department of Commerce offered a Clean Energy Utility Assistance Grant Program. They have partnered with Promise to contact, qualify and award grant funding to the city’s customers.

According to Niemeier’s resolution to the council, customers can self-attest their income level and number of residents in the household through an app or website. Once qualified, customers will receive $200 as a direct payment to their utility bill, according to their program.

She added, that the program must be joined through the attached grant agreement and funds must be disbursed before September 15, 2024.

She told the city council that there is a 5 percent allocation or $13,382.04 for administration costs if the city chooses to take that option.

Niemeier concluded, “If chosen, the total grant eligible for resident disbursement is $254,258.79.
