Cheney City Council approves city street work with over $700,000 of paving, sidewalk repair and waterline replacement during the summer.

Medical Lake Middle School honors Tom Litzinger for their contribution and services. In 1974, Litzinger painted the cougar on the center of the floor and the wall of the school gym.

Medical Lake Planning Commission continued discussions about whether to allow a marijuana retail, production and processing facility in city limits at their June 26 meeting.

Cheney’s population was quickly coming close to the milestone of 10,000 as current census numbers showed 9,855 residents in the city.

A new bookstore, Tree of Knowledge, opened its doors in downtown Cheney. The store offered new and used books, textbooks for Eastern Washington University students and a metaphysical section.

To provide necessary funding, Medical Lake City Administrator Curt Kelling promoted a park system combining residents of Cheney and Medical Lake school districts.

July 7, 1994

The Cheney City Council approved the purchase of a new fire truck, accepting the second lowest bid of $197,285 from Central States Fire Apparatus because of less cab noise than the $192,456 price submitted by Luverne Fire.

Cheney players Landon Johnston, Pete Montague, Ben Woodard and Eric Hegney, competing with the Spokane All-Stars South Babe Ruth team, won a Helena, Mont. tournament.

July 5, 1984

Ford Brothers, America’s second-largest circus, planned to come to Cheney during rodeo weekend and stage performances at a site near Kennedy Library. The circus was sponsored by the Associated Students of Eastern Washington University and the Cheney Chamber of Commerce.

The former interurban train depot located on Second Street in Cheney, and listed on the Register of Historical Places, was recently sold to Dan Shepard, Lindy Lucas and Skip Duty.

Cathy Van Kuren in the heptathlon and Jason Brown in the pentathlon earned trips to National in Provo, Utah.

50 years ago

July 11, 1974

The seventh annual Cheney Rodeo was expected to attract 150-200 cowboys who would compete for a purse that was sweetened by the addition of $850 from rodeo association monies.

Cheney City Council initiated a two-hour maximum stay in downtown parking spaces.
