Summer Hawks on losing skid

SPOKANE — Following four wins to open the season, the Cheney Single-A Summer Hawks find themselves looking for that original recipe.

Cheney lost a pair of games, one highlighted by pitching, 3-2 loss on June 20 to Lakeside and the other a 19-12 slugfest defeat to East Valley, June 22.

Lakeside pushed across runs in both the sixth and seventh innings with the winning score coming on an error, one of five committed by the Summer Hawks. An additional runner, however, was cut down at the plate trying to steal home.

Cheney had a pair of runners on board in the bottom of the seventh but left them there.

The Summer Hawks had six hits, all singles with Kort Schmitt the only player to hit safely twice.

Schmitt was also the starting pitcher going five innings, striking out six.

Trailing immediately after East Valley’s 7-run first inning and 11-3 after two, the Summer Hawks never gave up — but could never catch up.

Cheney chipped away with a 5-run third, but still trailed 16-5. And our more runs in the fifth were not enough to end the game due to the 10-run rule.

Seven different Summer Hawks had hits and 12 Cheney errors did more damage than the seven EV hits.

A bright spot for Cheney were the three innings that Trey Sloan pitched in relief where he dealt out seven strikeouts.
