Dirt Dawgs fall to Walla Walla

SPOKANE - Six games in five days saw the Medical Lake Dirt Dawgs go 4-2 last week.

They closed with five games at the Gonzaga Prep Tournament where the Dirt Dawgs lost to the Walla Walla Griz to open and close tourney play.

Walla Walla won 11-10 on June 21 and 8-7, June 23 - both in half-off fashion. In between Medical Lake topped West Valley 16U, 5-3, June 21 and won a pair vs. Mead, 12-3 and G-Prep 11-1, both on June 22.

A 10-run third inning busted open a game in which ML led Ferris 3-2. The Dirt Dawgs got 11 hits, led by Levi Brower who was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Colton Lonning was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Leading 9-3 through the top of the fifth, Medical Lake surrendered seven runs over the final three innings in the opening game of the G-Prep tournament.

The Dirt Dawgs' Jordan Brickhouse makes it safely to first base.

Gabe Swanson's single in the bottom of the seventh scored both the tying and winning runs for the Griz.

Ian Thompson led the Dirt Dawgs with a 3-for-4 afternoon while Colton Lonning, Brady Angell, Aiden Fontenot, Lincoln Dickey and Brower all were 2-for-4. Lonning stroked the lone extra-base hit for the Dirt Dawgs.

The Dirt Dawgs had little time to dwell on the loss and maybe showed that by jumping on West Valley for a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat. Thompson had three of the Dirt Dawgs nine hits while Lonning drove in two.

Medical Lake led 5-1 before West Valley staged a seventh-inning rally that produced a pair of runs. Fontenot, however, came on in relief of Boyd and struck out the side to end the threat.

Medical Lake scored in four of the five innings but it was a five-run fifth that ended it against Mead. Limited to just seven hits, the Dirt Dawgs used six Mead errors to aid its offense.

Angell had a 3-for-3 day at the plate that included a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Cole Carter pitched four innings, striking out eight and scattered three hits.

Against G-Prep, things took shape late for the Dirt Dawgs who broke a scoreless tie with a run in the third before pushing across 10 more over the final three innings - six in the sixth.

Boyd (4-for-5, 2 RBIs) and Fontenot (2-for-4) were Dirt Dawgs with multiple hits.

Medical Lake (13-8) returns to league play with home games vs. Ridgeline (June 24) and Deer Park (June 28/5:30 p.m.) before facing the Prairie Cardinals for a doubleheader in Post Falls, June 29 starting at noon.
