CHENEY — The Cheney AA Summer Hawks split a pair of American Legion games with the Mead Panthers last week winning 3-2, June 19 at home before being shutout 7-0 the following day at Mead.
The Summer Hawks win came in walk-off fashion as leadoff batter Kaiden Rasmussen reached on an error. Two batters later Rasmussen would score all the way from first following a bunt by Ben Bean and an error by the Panthers’ pitcher.
Earlier, Cheney erased a 1-0 Mead lead in the fourth when Jace Vega lead off with a double and moved to third on TJ Weindeman’s single. Vega would score on a wild pitch, but Weindeman would get caught trying to steal third.
Jake Swanson and Levi Wills each got on with walks, both eventually moving up a base on a combination of a wild pitch and passed ball. Rasmussen’s ground out scored Swanson.
The Summer Hawks were limited to to just three hits, two from Vega who also pitched 5 2/3rds innings in relief for Swanson.
Max Brischle pitched a complete game for Mead striking out seven and giving up as many hits, all singles. Bean and Chris Wilson each had two hits for Cheney.
Next up for Cheney is a doubleheader June 28 in Coeur d’Alene vs. the Couer d’Alene Lumberjacks starting at 5 p.m.
