Cheney wins four-of-five

CHENEY — The Cheney Summer Hawks AA team ended a brief 2-game losing streak to start their season by winning four of the past five games.

Their run started with a 24-9 thumping of Gonzaga Prep June 11, a split with Mt. Spokane, winning 8-2 and losing 14-4, June 12 and 13. A sweep of Pullman, June 15 came by scores of 9-7 and 11-2.

A 10-run first inning set the tone in the game played at Prep that only went five innings due to the 10-run rule.

T.J. Weindeman was 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Wyatt Broemeling was 3-for-4, driving in three and scoring three.

Cheney did a lot with just five hits vs. Mount Spokane as Weindeman’s triple drove in a pair in the third inning. Weindeman also pitched four innings where he struck out seven before being relieved by Jace Vega who delivered three innings of shutout ball to close it.

Mt. Spokane had three big innings in the second game, scoring five times in both the third and sixth to invoke the 10-run rule. Levi Wills scored twice for Cheney.

Summer Hawks top Pullman

A five-run sixth in game one powered the Summer Hawks past Pullman where Vega, Chris Wilson, Kaiden Rasmussen and Ben Bean each had two hits, including a triple from Wilson.

Cheney jumped on Pullman for four runs in the first inning of game two and never were challenged after that, building a 7-0 lead.

Rasmussen’s three hits, including a double, led a parade of Summer Hawks on offense. Vega, Weindeman and Bean all hit safely twice. Weindeman and Vega scattered five hits.

The Summer Hawks had a pair of games vs. Mead this week on June 19 at home and June 20 at home, 5:30 p.m.

The Cheney Summer Hawks A team had an 0-2 week in American Legion play last week in losses of 8-0 to the Medical Lake Dirt Dawgs and 7-5 to Ridgeline.

Trey Sloan had the only hits in the loss June 12 at West Plains rival Medical Lake. Also limited to just a pair of hits, the Dirt Dawgs were assisted by four errors and 15 walks.

Ridgeline battled back from a 3-0 deficit scoring runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Cheney’s lead was crafted in the third inning where both Nicc Calonge and Copper Weed walked. With one out Blaine Shuman reached on an error, driving in both Calonge and Weed. Shuman would later score on a wild pitch.

The Summer Hawks other runs came in the fifth when with two outs Andrew Hammons hits into the fielder’s choice and is safe at first. A Kody Beamer single, coupled with Ridgeline errors puts runners on second and third. Connor Whitman’s single later drove in both runs.

Whitman was a presence on the mound, too, where in 5-2/3rds innings he allowed just one hit and struck out 13 but got the loss.

Cheney remained at home for a single game June 20 vs. Lakeside (5:30 p.m.), a doubleheader with Mt. Spokane (June 21) at 2 p.m. followed by East Valley (June 22 at 2 p.m.) and capped by G-Prep (June24) 5:30.

The Medical Lake Dirt Dawgs Single-A American Legion team sandwiched a pair of wins around three losses last week.

The Dirt Dawgs cruised past the Cheney Summer Hawks A’s 7-0, June 12, getting only two hits from Jordan Brickhouse and Lincoln Dickey but taking advantage of 15 walks.

Aiden Fontenot gave up Cheney’s only two hits over five innings but countered with eight strikeouts on the mound for the win. Cole Carter closed things out.

Trouble appeared at the Walla Walla Father’s Day Tournament where Medical Lake opened with a 9-2 loss to the Kennewick Phantoms, June 15.

“Pitching has been one of strengths leading into the tourney,” head coach Lance Michaud wrote in a text message. “We couldn’t throw a strike.”

Ian Thompson, Levi Brower and Fontenot each had two-hit games vs. Kennewick.

In the second game that day, ML was in an immediate hole, down 5-0 after the first inning against the Columbia Basin Riverdogs. Again, 10 walks added to just four Riverdog hits.

Thompson, Brower and Zach Boyd each had multiple hits with two each with Boyd mixing in a double.

Dirt Dawgs

struggle last week

The Dirt Dawgs opened June 16 play with a damaging second inning where the Moscow Blue Devils scored six times. Medical Lake would try to come back with a three-run fifth and adding a pair in the sixth.

Boyd would have two hits for ML, including a double, and was the only Dirt Dawg to do so.

A three hit in three at bat day for Carter was part of a 16-hit attack vs. Gonzaga Prep that closed tournament play with a 14-10 victory.

The Dirt Dawgs scored 12 times in the game’s final three innings, but Prep scored eight.

Both Carter and Levi Wills were three-for-three. “We left runners in scoring position with less than two outs 15 times this weekend,” a frustrated Michaud said.

Following a return to league play June 19 vs. Ferris, the Dirt Dawgs return to tournament play at Gonzaga Prep featuring Walla Walla (3 p.m.) and West Valley (5:30), both June 21 followed by Mead (4 p.m.) and G-Prep (6:30) June 22.
