Council reviews transportation plan

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — City Planner Heather Trautman present the six-year transportation improvement program to the City Council during its June 10 meeting.

As it is required by Washington state law, the program includes maintenance, major reconstruction projects, shared-use paths, and bicycle lanes, with final project decisions made by the City Council.

"We integrate our planning, housing, population, and business growth to look at the impact on each of our plans," Trautman said, noting the council's goal to maximize matching funds, which has resulted in securing between $8-12 million in grants over the past year.

Trautman highlighted recent grant applications and ongoing projects, including improvements on Sixth Avenue, Lawson Street from U.S. highway 2, and the development of Garfield to Hayford roads. She confirmed the completion of 10th Avenue by November and discussed the potential of smart technology grants to enhance traffic management and communication.

"Virtually all streets in Airway Heights are local access," Trautman said. Additionally, she addressed the council's efforts to inform and guide drivers with advanced electronic messaging systems.

The council also reviewed a grant application presented by Parks, Recreation and Community Service Director J.C. Kennedy, announcing a committee recommended its approval. The motion to approve the grant application was approved.
