Cheney breaks ground for new pool

Ceremony attracted many local residents

CHENEY – The city hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for the planned Aquatics Center last Thursday at Hagelin Park.

The existing city pool has gone through many repairs and has had many shutdowns with equipment and structural problems. So, voters last year approved a measure to fund a new pool.

"This pool was built in 1964 and served the people of Cheney for many years," Mayor Chris Grover said. "It has long gone past its use."

People of Cheney along with city council members, and park board members turned out for the groundbreaking ceremony.

The mayor reminisced about the times when he and other Cheneyites spent their time at the pool in their youth.

In 2009, the city had another aquatics park on the ballot, but it failed by 2% of the vote needed in state election criteria.

Critics said the 50 acres owned by the city was too far from the center of the city and the traffic was too fast in that area.

Once complete, the new facility will include a 5,000-square -foot pool house, a 500-square-foot community meeting room, a six-lane, 25-yard lap pool, a zero-depth entry pool with spray features, a lazy river, a water slide and other aquatic amenities.

NAC Architecture is the designer for the project.

Walker Construction will start work on the pool in the next couple of weeks, according to the city.

The site surveying, planning and team coordination are already underway.

According to the city, this project's anticipated completion date is June 2025.
