904/Betz goes into construction mode

Partial closure set for after Cheney Rodeo

CHENEY – Washington State Department of Transportation will repave the railroad crossing at the intersection of State Route 904 and Betz Road in Cheney starting July 16.

This intersection is not only used by the residents of Cheney, but also used by Washington Eastern Railroad. It has been over 20 years since the last time it was repaved according to the state transportation department.

According to their website, this $2.6 million project will be broken down into two phases to ensure Cheney residents can still use the intersection. The date was picked to start after Cheney Rodeo weekend according to Todd Ableman, Cheney Public Works Director.

Phase one starts on July 16 to July 22 and the transportation department will be closing all southbound and northbound lanes of State Route 904 at the railroad crossing directly south of Betz Road.

According to the transportation department, "A detour for travelers who use southbound State Route 904 will be set up via Betz Road to 6th Street to Simpson Parkway. Travelers on northbound State Route 904 can detour via Simpson Parkway to 6th Street to Betz Road."

Phase two of the project takes place on July 24 to July 30. This will require the closure of Betz Road in both directions directly to the west of Highway 904 intersection. The southbound highway 904 turn lane to Betz Road will also be closed during this phase of construction. Those who need access to Betz Road will remain on Highway 904 until they reach Simpson Parkway and detour via 6th Street.

No lane restrictions or closures on State Route 904 will be permitted between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. during this phase.
