Boy Scouts perform ceremony on Flag Day

CHENEY – Cheney Boy Scouts, Troop 356, traditionally permanently retired the colors at Cheney Veterans Memorial Park last Friday.

Every year on Flag Day, June 14, The Boy Scouts, perform the Unserviceable Flags Ceremony. This is tradition that was set by the American Legion, who sponsors the Boy Scouts, since 1937 which was passed by the U.S. Congress on Dec. 22, 1942.

The rules that were set are that proper respect to the flag must be given during the ceremony. Flags that become worn, torn or faded to be honorably retired for life and performed in public with respectful and honorable rites.

The day to perform this ceremony was set as June 14. Also, the Pledge of Allegiance must be said and a moment of silence following it.
