Cheney graduates 317 seniors

Class of 2024 the largest ever

SPOKANE - Last Thursday night marked a monumental occasion for the graduating seniors of Cheney High School as they took center stage at Gonzaga University's McCarthey Athletic Center to receive their diplomas.

Nearly 6,000 attendees filled the arena - as if the Zags were about to play - to witness a record-breaking 317 seniors proudly walk across the stage.

That marks a significant increase from the 219 graduates of the previous year.

The class motto quoted a famous "Ferris Bueller" saying.

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it," resonated deeply as each graduate embraced the occasion with flair and individuality.

Accompanied by the band playing "Pomp and Circumstance," each graduate received thunderous applause from families and friends as they made their walk to their seats.

Following the rendition of the National Anthem by the school choir, Associated Student Body President Zachary Cox set the tone for the evening with a mixture of humor and heartfelt wisdom in his welcoming address.

Subsequent speeches from class speakers Halley Doney, Callie Potter, and Dale Timothy Pasion offered diverse perspectives on seizing the moment and living life to the fullest.

School Principal Brett Hale recognized various student achievements, including participation in programs like running start and honors, as well as acknowledging those embarking on post-graduation paths, including military service, college and trade schools.

School District Superintendent Ben Ferney, Ph.D., offered words of encouragement.

The reading of graduates' names by school staff members was punctuated by enthusiastic performances by students, showcasing their excitement at receiving their diplomas.

As the culmination of the evening approached, Senior Class President Lucas Hooe led his peers in the symbolic turning of the tassel, followed by the jubilant tossing of caps into the air, signifying the end of one chapter and the beginning of another for the remarkable Class of 2024.
