Liberty girls in state fastpitch tournament

YAKIMA — The Liberty (Spangle) girls fastpitch team finished the season with a single loss.

This week, the Lancers (22-1) will have an opportunity to show they deserve a shot at the state Class 2B title.

The No. 5-ranked Lancers charge into the Gateway Sports Complex for the state fastpitch softball tournament Friday, May 24.

They open tournament play at 10 a.m. on Field No. 3 against the No. 12-ranked Lake Roosevelt Raiders (18-5) from Coulee Dam.

The Lancers are the top team out of the Northeast 2B League; the Raiders finished second in the Central B League behind No. 2-ranked powerhouse Okanogan (21-1).

A loss will send the Lancers home. A win will put them in the Top 8 teams in the state. It will also put them in a game against the No. 4-ranked Kittitas Coyotes at 2 p.m. Friday on Field No. 2.

The Lancers’ only loss this season was the opening game of a double header against Northwest Christian (Colbert).

The Crusaders shocked the Lancers, 9-3, in that game, but Liberty dominated the nightcap, winning 13-1.

Northwest Christian reached state, as well, as the No. 9 seed. The Crusaders will play No. 8 Pe Ell/Willapa Valley at 10 a.m. in a loser-out game.

In addition to Liberty, the girls from Lind-Ritzville Sprague qualified for state as the No. 11 seed.

The Bronco girls (15-9) play No. 6 Warden (18-6) at 10 a.m. Friday in a loser-out game.

The Broncos are the third team out of the Northeast 2B League.
