Cheney baseball ousted in playoffs

CHENEY - The Cheney Blackhawks were playing some pretty good baseball recently, just not good enough to extend their season.

Cheney (10-14) was ousted from postseason May 11 following a 9-6 loss in district play to Mount Spokane where they were unable to quell the Greater Spokane League co-champ Wildcats.

A five-run fifth did in the Blackhawks who were led by Clayton Wood's two hits and three RBIs.

That game followed Cheney's 7-0 win over University earlier in the day where Quinn Hubbs was masterful on the mound pitching a complete game one-hitter.

Hubbs, who for three years led the GSL in strikeouts and is headed to Clark College win Vancouver, Wash., gave up the lone hit in the top of the sixth while striking out six.

And Hubbs also had three hits and a pair of runs batted in.

"He's the best big game pitcher that I've seen," Beamer said. "I would take him in a big game over any kid in the league."

Things would have been much easier had the Blackhawks responded better in their playoff opener, May 7 in Kennewick against Southridge.

"We just we just didn't show up," a disappointed head coach, Rob Beamer, said suggesting the Blackhawks were "Sort of going through the motions."

Had Cheney won that game against Southridge they were automatically going to state, Beamer said.

This came contrary to Cheney having won four straight prior to end the regular GSL season following a slow start.

"We just stuck to our philosophies, kept doing it, kept doing it and then they finally started to turn around," Beamer explained.

Beamer and many of the rest of the Blackhawks ride right into American Legion play in a few days. Beamer, however, will be in a different role coaching his sons with the Summer Hawks 15-U A team. His assistant coach, Ozzie Smith, will run the AA team.

Both programs went to the state tournament in 2023 and expect to compete there again.
