AIRWAY HEIGHTS – At the recent West Plains Safety Alliance (WPSA) meeting, local leaders discussed the urgent need for enhanced crisis response teams and efforts to address youth violence through federal grants.
Chief Brad Richmond of Airway Heights underscored the necessity of more intensive commitment.
“We need more intensive commitment to enhance our crisis response teams,” Richmond said, referring to a $200,000 WA grant aimed at this initiative.
Alise Mnati, the grant writer for Airway Heights, detailed the city’s application for the OJJDP Enhancing School Capacity to Address Youth Violence grant.
“We’re trying to get this grant to provide critical resources for our community,” Mnati said.
The three-year grant proposal includes substantial funding for various community pro grams:
• $274,145.34 for a full-time site coordinator at Cheney High School.
• $120,000 for a Po lice Adventure League for 30 teen girls through Peak 7 Adventures.
• $30,000 for 100 youth scholarships for Kingdom Wrestling via Heights Church.
• $104,367.24 for a part-time Marshallese translator/mentor at Cheney Public Schools.
• $374,917.98 for a full-time project man ager and technology for new positions within the Airway Heights Police Department.
Mnati emphasized that letters of support for the joint application are due June 24.
