Eastern alumni to help commission

CHENEY — The Historic Preservation Commission welcomed Michelle Thompson, a certified local government coordinator for the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation during its May 2 meeting.

Thompson provided an opportunity for commission members to gain insights into state-level preservation efforts and explore avenues for collaboration.

Michelle Thompson, a Cheney native, graduated from Eastern Washington University with a Bachelor’s in Art History before pursuing her Master’s in Science in Historic Preservation.

CLGs, as outlined by the DAHP, preserve local heritage through a range of initiatives.

These include maintaining a qualified historic preservation commission, adopting local ordinances to establish registers of historic places, and conducting design reviews for changes to listed buildings.

During her presentation, Thompson shared insights gleaned from her academic and professional journey, emphasizing the importance of local engagement in heritage conservation. Drawing from her experiences, she outlined the role of CLGs in facilitating preservation efforts and fostering community participation.

In addition to her professional expertise, Thompson’s connection to Cheney enriched the discussion. Her knowledge of the community’s history and cultural landscape provided context for ongoing preservation initiatives.
