Beeman wants to establish stricter guidelines

CHENEY – During the Historic Preservation Commission meeting May 2, members delved into the details of the grant application process with the state’s Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.

The commission is seeking a $6,500 grant, as part of the Certified Local Government Grants program, to further bolster historic preservation efforts within Cheney.

This grant application was recently approved by the city council on April 23, and is meant to be allocated for planning and preservation objectives.

Susan Beeman, the permit technician for the city’s planning department, offered updates on the grant application’s progress.

“This grant application is meant to bolster historic preservation,” Beeman stated.

Beeman also drew attention to a change in the language concerning historic preservation in Cheney’s comprehensive plans.

While previous versions had more comprehensive regulations, recent updates have shown a decrease in specificity. Beeman aims to establish stricter guidelines, a goal that raised concerns for the city council last week.

“If the CLG grant funding comes through we’ll have enough time for it to be ready,” Beeman reassured the commission.

Additionally, Beeman introduced the intern grant writer, Henry White, a recent history graduate from Eastern Washington University. White, seeking experience in grant writing, is poised to lend his expertise to preservation.
