Cheney boys sweep track competition

Cheney track and field competed in its next-to-last Greater Spokane League meet April 26 with the boys scoring a pair of easy wins and the girl’s narrow losses. The Blackhawks’ boys topped Ferris 107-38 and Ridgeline 90-55 while the girls lost to Ferris 74-66 and Ridgeline 71-69.

Later in the week, both teams competed at the Shoreline Invitational where the Blackhawk boys were sixth out of 44 teams and girls seventh in a 50-team field.

“It was a great senior night, but we were gearing up for Shoreline, so most kids only did less events to not overtax themselves before traveling across the state,” head coach Derek Slaughter wrote in an email.

The Cheney boys collected six track event firsts plus three more in the field last week.

Tucker VanWormer turned a 22.85 second time in the 200 meters for the win and second in the 100 at with a PR at 11.13. Andrew Houndonougbo had a 53.33 to win the 400 meters.

Cheney also captured the 110-meter hurdles with a 1-2-3-4 finish led by Ethan Guske (16.47) and followed by Mason Stinson (16.75) Sam Coffin (17.47) all with PRs and Colton Hallet (18.60). Stinson, Cameron Johnson, Houndonougbo and Trevor Ewert teamed to capture the 4X400 at 3:34.49.

On the distance side Calvin Hilton’s 4-minute, 22.86-second time was a season best in the 1,600 meters. Holland Hurd led a 1-2 Cheney finish in the 3,200 with his 10:04 PR barely edging the 10:06.53 of Calvin Hilton.

Eugene Hennequin had a win in the long-jump at 21-0.5 feet and Andrew Strawn’s 15-foot PR won the pole vault. Feesochi Ogbozor won the high-jump with a 6-foot even effort and tied teammate Eugene Hennequin who was third, both PRs.

Girls wins came from Natalie Richards — twice — in the 100-meter hurdles (16.39 PR) and in the 300 (51.67).

Clara Browne won the discus at 130-3 while Joy Assonken had a 116-4 in the javelin, followed by Browne’s 103-6. Mariah Hill cleared 4-8 in the high jump.

At Shoreline, Assonken had a lifetime PR in the javelin with a 123-01. Browne had a 119-11 in the discus and Hannah Ward’s 11:49.17 was a PR in the 3,200. Calvin Hilton turned a 9:12.97 PR in the 3,200 for a new school record.

“I can feel the momentum of the team starting to change,” Slaughter said. “We are on the right track and have the post season in our minds the next couple of weeks.”

Medical Lake

NINE MILE FALLS — Five individual wins and a handful of other solid performances helped the Medical Lake girls earn a nail-biting team win in a Northeast A League track meet April 24 at Lakeside High School.

It was one of those near misses that allowed the Cardinals to sneak past Freeman, 71-70, perhaps lessening the sting of Lakeside’s 117-33 win. Medical Lake’s boys lost to Freeman, 90-53, and Lakeside, 118-27.

“We just we got a lot of second and thirds,” Coach Gene Blankenship said.

It was Chiche Okemgbo who delivered — but not in her usual way — when she won second-place in discus with a throw of 101-09, which gave the Cards just enough points.

“(She scored) enough points that no matter what happened after that, we were going to win by one point,” Blankenship said. And it established a new school record that had stood since 2000.

Okemgbo also won shot put with a 42-02.5 personal record throw and triple jump with a 33-03 leap. She didn’t compete in the javelin.

Medical Lake’s other win came from Autumn Trout in the 400, where her 1:02.39 time was a personal record. Another notable effort included Mya Gardner’s runner-up in the 800 in 1:02.39, also a personal record.

Nakai Ornelas had the only boys individual win in the 3,200 meters in 10:21.04. And following an early injury, Dakotah Phillips earned second in pole vault, clearing 11-06.

Trips to the Shoreline and Undeberg Invitationals were more rewards for athletes versus producing points, Blankenship said.

“They get personal records which is one of the reasons why we go there,” Blankenship said. “If you travel over night you create a little bit of excitement.”

Okemgbo landed in second-place in the shot with a 39-10 at Shoreline for the Cardinals’ highest finish.

Medical Lake dialed down the regular season with an April 30 NEA meet against Newport.

The District 7 championships are May 17-18 at Riverside High School in Chattaroy.
