Major crimes detectives investigate March 8 shooting

SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane Valley Major Crimes Detectives apprehended 29-year-old Brendon M. McCullough, a repeat felon, following his involvement in a shooting incident on March 8. McCullough faces multiple felony charges in connection with the altercation.

According to ongoing investigations, McCullough and the deceased, 16-year-old Nathaniel Byers, purportedly ventured to an apartment on S. Bowdish Road to carry out a drug-related robbery. McCullough, accompanied by an adult female, engaged in the robbery within the apartment, resulting in a struggle with an individual identified as M-1, alleged to be the dealer. Amidst the altercation, gunfire erupted.

Upon hearing the commotion, Byers, armed with a pistol, rushed to the scene from outside. A confrontation ensued between Byers and another man inside the apartment, resulting in gunfire exchange and Byers succumbing to fatal injuries.

Subsequently, the second man shot McCullough as the struggle persisted. McCullough fled the premises in a white Yukon, later crashing the vehicle near East 16th Avenue and Highway 27 during a high-speed pursuit.

Law enforcement swiftly detained McCullough and provided medical assistance for his injuries. The Yukon was seized for further investigation.

As additional deputies scoured the vicinity for McCullough and the white Yukon, Spokane Regional Emergency Communications (SREC) dispatchers disseminated pertinent information to law enforcement units across the area.

Later, at approximately 12:35 am, a Washington State Patrol Trooper, engaged in the search, spotted a white Yukon barreling northward on Highway 27 at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The Trooper initiated pursuit, witnessing the vehicle careen off the roadside near East 16th Avenue and Highway 27.

Responding Deputies swiftly converged on the scene, effecting McCullough’s apprehension and administering immediate medical aid for his gunshot wounds. Spokane Valley Firefighters rendered additional medical assistance, facilitating McCullough’s transport to the hospital. The Yukon was impounded pending a thorough search under warrant.

Major Crimes Detectives and Spokane County Sheriff’s Forensic personnel promptly arrived to conduct a comprehensive investigation and gather evidence.

Subsequent execution of search warrants yielded the discovery and seizure of substantial quantities of controlled substances, drug paraphernalia, firearms, cash, and electronic devices from the apartment.

Additionally, detectives recovered a cell phone, a bag containing numerous blue pills suspected to be Fentanyl, drug paraphernalia, and other items from a gas station garbage can. Inside the Yukon, they seized a significant cache of blue pills, along with firearms-related items and smaller amounts of controlled substances and paraphernalia.

McCullough faces charges including criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, first degree attempted robbery, first degree assault, second degree unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges and arrests.
