McKennon selected as new principal

Former Sunset Elementary teacher chosen

CHENEY - Following an extensive interview process, Sara McKennon has been chosen as the next principal of Sunset Elementary School, pending board approval.

The selection comes after a rigorous evaluation involving various stakeholders, including district administrators, staff and students.

Superintendent Ben Ferney expressed satisfaction with the outcome.

"The pool of candidates for the Sunset principal position was strong, and Sara rose to the top throughout the interview process," he said. "I am excited for Sara and the future of Sunset!"

McKennon's return to Sunset Elementary holds special significance, given her previous tenure at the school as a fourth- and fifth-grade teacher from 2008-15.

In the interim, she served as an assistant principal at Salnave Elementary School, where she played a key role in implementing the Professional Learning Communities process and contributing to the School Improvement Plan alongside Principal Celina Brennan.

McKennon brings a wealth of administrative experience to her new role, having served as an administrative designee at Sunset Elementary during her teaching years and as a teacher and acting administrator at Dr. Howard D. Elementary School in San Bernardino, Calif., from 2001-08.

"I am beyond honored and excited to accept the position as principal at Sunset Elementary and return to a community that I hold so dear," McKennon said. "I look forward to working collaboratively with staff, students, families, and the community to foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all."

District leadership, Sunset Elementary staff, and students all participated in interviews and campus tours, ensuring that the candidate best suited to lead Sunset Elementary was chosen.
