City applies for preservation grant

CHENEY – Council members unanimously approved Resolution F—242, which pertained to the submission of a grant application to the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation druing an April 23 meeting.

The grant aims to support efforts in preserving city historic and cultural resources.

“This money could help us update Cheney’s historic preservation ordinance and integrate preservation strategies into our Comprehensive Plan,” Public Works Director Todd Ableman said.

Councilman Paul Schmidt expressed concern about potential restrictions in accepting the grant, particularly regarding language and regulations that may conflict with city objectives.

“I’m concerned if we take their money, they will expect us to use their language,” Schmidt said. “We need to take a look and see where it fits into the comprehensive plan,” Schmidt cautioned, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the city’s autonomy in decision-making.
