Feed Cheney honors student volunteers

Cheney FFA recently won Chase award

CHENEY – In its 14th year, Feed Cheney continues to serve community support and collaboration, with the Cheney FFA club and culinary arts students taking center stage in providing nourishment and fellowship to those in need.

Carol Kreigh, an organizer of the event, shed light on the evolution and significance of Feed Cheney.

The event has undergone significant changes over the past two years, according to Kreigh.

While they no longer distribute groceries, thanks to the Cheney Cupboard, Feed Cheney remains dedicated to offering a free community meal.

She emphasized the vital role played by FFA and culinary arts students from Cheney High School, who have been instrumental in supplying food since Fall 2022.

Kreigh highlighted the community's generosity, stating, "Donations from local churches and schools sustain our efforts, and we're grateful to the City of Cheney for providing the venue."

"The FFA, formerly known as Future Farmers of America, instills valuable skills in employment, farming, ranching, and community service," said FFA student Macy Rains. "I personally focus on veterinary science."

Celebrating the accomplishments of the FFA, Kreigh proudly announced, "Our FFA group recently earned the highest accolade at the Chase Youth Awards for their outstanding community service, receiving the commissioner's award from the Chase Youth Commission."

All donations for Feed Cheney come from individuals and churches. Additionally, their annual Souperbowl of Caring event provides extra support.

This week, greenhouse seed planting takes center stage as the resource of the event.

Natalie Toucin, who worked with the Spokane Regional Health District, credited with initiating Feed Cheney, envisioned a platform for providing nutritious meals without criteria, as Kreigh recounted.

In addition to the FFA and culinary arts students, the event welcomed students from Eastern Washington University pursuing their bachelor's in social work.
