Cheney fastpitch on hot streak

Blackhawks have 5 wins in last 6 games

CHENEY - A 2-1 week has kept Cheney fast pitch softball on a recent hot streak in Greater Spokane League play.

Following an 11-1 loss to Mt. Spokane, April 16, the Blackhawks got victories over Ferris, 10-8 on April 18 and Lewis and Clark, 8-1 the following afternoon. Cheney has five wins in its last six games.

A 5-run first inning set the tone against Mt. Spokane who limited Cheney (8-4 GSL, 8-6 overall) to just four hits. The 11-1 Wildcats trail GSL leader University at 12-0.

Cheney scored runs in the first four innings, including a four-run first to build a 9-5 lead against Ferris (5-7, 6-8) and held on to win. Millie Beito and Allie Halverson each had two hits for Cheney. Maddy Hurley went all seven innings to earn the win following a return from injury.

A five-run third was the difference against LC (1-10, 1-10) and Halverson provided some of that punch with a 4-for-4 day and a pair of RBIs. Beito had a pair of hits, including a double.

Cheney's success came despite missing a pair of key performers in the outfield head coach Gary Blake said. Macie Gasperiono was absent all three games and Mia Ashcroft the last two.

The Ferris game marked the start of the second half of the GSL schedule Blackhawks head into the final half-dozen regular season games. Those started with matchups with a pair of teams battling Cheney for position with Ridgeline (6-6) on April 23 and Mead (9-3) April 26 and U-Hi in between on April 25

Perhaps most critical in that stretch is "We need to beat Ridgeline, the team right behind us," Blake said.
