Take Back event called a success

70 pounds of medicine collected

CHENEY – City officials are calling the April 13 Medication Take Back Event a success.

More than 70 pounds of unused, outdated medications were collected, officials said.

The event proved to be a resounding success according to Jessica Deutsch, the Community Coalition Coordinator for Talk2HealthyChoices.

The organization was among the participants, which also included local police, fire and other emergency responders.

Hundreds of community members participated in the event, contributing to the collection of numerous bottles of medications.

"People brought shopping bags filled with medications," Deutsch said.

Deutsch expressed gratitude for the overwhelming response.

"Your participation speaks volumes about the dedication and commitment of the West Plains community to combat the misuse of prescription drugs," she said.

The significance of the event extends beyond simple disposal, as it plays a crucial role in addressing the opioid epidemic, she said. By safely disposing of medications, attendees actively contribute to preventing their misuse and safeguarding the health and well-being of the community.

Reflecting on the event's success, Alise Mnati, a social worker with the Airway Heights Police Department, inquired about the volume of medications collected.

"We had four boxes full of medication, around 70 pounds," Deutsch said.

This year's event was particularly noteworthy, as Mnati highlighted the increased resources allocated to support the initiative.

"This year we actually have more resources," Mnati said. "We got $6,000 from the Spokane Parks Foundation."
