Library district kicks off May activities

SPOKANE — The Spokane County Library District is opening May programs with a Star Wars theme.

Star Wars Jedi Academy invites youngsters to try out galactic activities and show off themed costumes. Families and kids can flex their building skills during LEGO Free Play and learn more STEAM during Take It Apart, Build It, Rock Garden Painting Party and Creating Rubber Band Racers.

Teens can design Star Wars Temporary Tattoo-ines and learn about Documentary Filmmaking.

If Star Wars is too far out of this world for you, the library district is also offering several outdoor activities for adults.

May library events for adults include bird-watching hikes, Beekeeping 101, Attracting Birds to Your Yard and gardening programs, such as Gardening with Native Plants, No-Dig Gardening, and Starter Plants Swap. Creativity takes different forms during the library workshops Blacksmithing Basics, Dollhouse Miniatures: Making a Lemonade Stand, 3D Printing: Create a Mini Garden Trellis, and Creating a Fairy Garden Terrarium.

Learn how to create a traditional dish during World Cook: Lebanese Food, Explore Virtual Reality, and attend a documentary viewing of Wine, Women, & Dementia. Attend a learning circle to gain knowledge about the History & Culture of Afghanistan. Get valuable information during Estate Planning 101, Medicare: Getting Started, Digitizing Home Movies, and using Social Media for Small Business.

For National Small Business Month in May, local businesses share their services during library programs, including Bicycle Tire Replacement, Hatha yoga, and two Walking Tours in Millwood and Cheney.

SCLD Online Authors Series features bestselling and award-winning writers in May: Douglas Brunt, Nina Simon, and Rebecca F. Kuang.

SCLD has partnered with the League of Women Voters Spokane Area to offer a discussion for adults: Expo ’74: 50 Years of Environmental Awareness. And SCLD is accepting submissions of Expo ’74 souvenirs and stories from the public through May 10 for the Expo ’74: 50th Anniversary Celebration Exhibit in July at eight of its libraries and online.
