Council updated on city finances

Medical Lake addresses deficiencies

MEDICAL LAKE – During the April 16 City Council meeting, Finance Director Koss Ronhault presented a comprehensive budget report for the first quarter of the year.

Ronhault provided insights into the financial report, emphasizing the meticulous process of reviewing financial statements and ensuring compliance.

“We have controls in place, secondary reviews of journal entries, reconciliation procedures, a lot of practices that weren’t in place,” he said.

Ronhault highlighted efforts to rectify deficiencies identified in the 2022 financial statements and underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in financial management.

The finalized financial statements will be presented to the City Council in May for review and approval.

Regarding the budget report, Ronhault provided an overview of the city’s financial activity, noting positive trends in revenue collection, particularly from property taxes, sales tax, gas tax, electric B&O, and building permits.

However, he said certain expenses are exceeding predictions, such as administrative services and street maintenance, attributing them to factors like insurance and registration fees and increased capital purchases.

Furthermore, Ronhault discussed capital improvements projects and proprietary funds, noting fluctuations in revenue and expenditures across different sectors like water, solid waste and wastewater.

He mentioned ongoing initiatives, including city beautification projects and the development of broadband infrastructure, aimed at enhancing community services and amenities.
