Blackhawks fastpitch has solid week

SPOKANE —A no-hitter by Maya De La Cruz and a 24-0 win over North Central on April 12 concluded a 3-1 week for Cheney fastpitch in Greater Spokane League play.

While Blackhawks’ bats were silenced in an April 8 loss, 7-0, at University, they came alive to conclude the week with a 25-5 win at Central Valley on April 9 and a 17-6 victory over at Gonzaga Prep on April 11.

Coupled with the North Central win, Cheney concluded the first half of the GSL schedule with a 6-3 record and in fourth place.

Against North Central, Cheney (6-3 GSL, 6-5 overall) broke the game open with an 11-run second inning.

Maddie Hurley went 3-for-4 with a triple and five RBIs and Mia Ashcroft was 3-for-3 with a triple, double and three RBIs to lead the offense.

For the week, big offensive production came from both Ashcroft and Millie Beito, according to head coach Gary Blake, as each hit .714.

Ashcroft went 10-14, had 13 RBIs, including a grand-slam homerun versus G-Prep. Beito contributed one RBI.

Blake also noted that Reese Scholle “broke out” and was 8-for-13 week at the plate and a .615 average.
