Budget funds education, recovery and water projects

State budget has allocations for 9th District

OLYMPIA — The state’s supplemental capital budget approved March 6 included funding for several 9th Legislative District projects.

Several school districts were allocated funds from the modernization program, including LaCrosse, Palouse, Pomeroy, Steptoe and others.

In Pullman, Washington State University also is allocated $10 million for anew digester for the Knott Dairy Center, which makes Cougar Gold cheese. The school will also get $3 million for an energy program.

Eastern Washington University in Cheney also received allocations, including $10 million for energy improvements for athletic facilities.

“While this compromise version of the supplemental capital budget is not as strong in some areas as the version developed and approved by the Senate earlier in the session, it is still a good capital budget that will help communities across Washington, and address many important needs,” Sen. Mark Schoesler, R-Ritzville said.

Schoesler represents the 9th Legislative District, which includes Whitman, Lincoln, southern Spokane, eastern Adams and Franklin, and other counties. He is also the Senate’s lead Republican capital budget writer.

Other 9th District projects receiving funds include:

• Tristate Health Hospital in Clarkston — $1 million.

• Odessa Pipeline project — $250,000.

• Tekoa Parks and Recreation — $200,000.

• Davenport Senior Center — $120,000

• Latah water system rehabilitation project — $187,000.

• Regional Theatre of the Palouse in Pullman — $77,000.

The budget also included $3.5 million for cleanup of the Gray and Oregon Road wildfires in Spokane County and $5.5 million for the Odessa Ground Water Replacement Program.

“The Odessa ground water project and the wildfire recovery projects were initiated in the Senate this year and the Senate insisted that these projects stay in the final capital budget,” Schoesler said. “I’m pleased that we succeeded in keeping these projects in the budget.”

The 2024 legislative session ended March 7.
