Heated debate erupts at city council meeting over 'Nextdoor' post

Councilman Merkel defends himself against accusations of posting confidential information

SPOKANE VALLEY – A recent city council meeting turned into a heated debate over the alleged disclosure of information discussed during an executive session. The focus of the discussion revolved around Councilman Al Merkel's statements regarding the purchase of land, sparking accusations of breaching confidentiality and violating procedural norms.

The controversy unfolded during the council meeting held on March 5, following a Nextdoor post by Councilmember Merkel that suggested the purchase of land had been discussed and decided upon during an executive session on Tuesday, February 27. However, Councilwoman Jessica Yaeger vehemently opposed Merkel's assertion, highlighting the violation of the Washington State Open Public Meetings Act and the privilege of executive session discussions.

Councilwoman Yaeger stated, "Discussion of anything during an executive session to the outside is a violation... Council did not take any action during the executive session, any assertion to the contrary is untrue."

In response to Yaeger's remarks, Councilman Merkel attempted to clarify his statements, acknowledging an error in his previous communication. He contended that he had not disclosed any confidential information from the executive session but rather responded to a question he received regarding the council's activities during such sessions.

However, tensions escalated as fellow council members expressed distrust and concern over Merkel's actions. Councilman Rod Higgins emphasized the significance of upholding the confidentiality of executive sessions, stating, "The simple fact that you saw fit to breach the sanctity of an executive session... it's upsetting, you can't unsee it or undo the damage."

Councilwoman Laura Padden echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of adhering to established procedures and refraining from discussing executive session matters publicly.

Despite Merkel's attempts to defend his actions and clarify misunderstandings, the council meeting witnessed passionate exchanges and accusations regarding the breach of confidentiality and trust within the council.

The controversy also spilled over into public comments, with individuals expressing both support and condemnation for Councilman Merkel. Some individuals criticized the opposing council members for their handling of the situation, while others called for accountability and adherence to established protocols.
