Three Liberty wrestlers medal in Tacoma Dome

Strobel leads area grapplers with silver

TACOMA - Three Liberty wrestlers returned home from the state Mat Classic XXXV wrestling tournament with medals.

Maddex Strobel won silver at 150 pounds, Clae Holling bronze at 165 and Joey Matherly was fifth at 175 in the tournament Feb. 16-17 in the Tacoma Dome.

As a team, the Lancers tied for seventh with Davenport, each with 61.0 team points in the 1B/2B division. Tonasket won the division with 217.0 team points.

Strobel opened with a bye and then pinned his next two competitors to reach the finals. He pinned Evan Roxby of Okanogan in 2:49 and then Francis Louie of Lake Roosevelt in 3:39.

In the championship, he lost a narrow, 3-2 decision to Matthew Gray of Goldendale.

Holling also opened with a bye and then pinned Dorien Cano of Rainier in 2:56. But in the semifinals, he was edged, 8-7, by Tyson Portmann of Willapa Valley, sending him to the wrestlebacks, where he pinned his next two opponents.

In those bouts, he pinned Brody Schillinger of Davenport in 1:24 and then Ayden Grooms of Okanogan in 3:27 to finish third.

Matherly opened state by pinning Logan Smith of Goldendale in 2:31 and then Evan Kunkel of Napavine in 3:12.

But in the semifinals, Granger's Cody Northwind dominated Matherly, winning by technical fall, 15-0, in 3:23. In his next match, he lost a 9-5 decision to Josiah Beiter of Cle Elum-Roslyn.

His final match, for fifth-place, was won due to a medical forfeit by Jacob Price of Adna.

Medical Lake

True Cole was the only Cardinal to compete in the state Mat Classic.

Wrestling at 215 pounds in the 1A division, Cole was unable to get a win.

He was pinned by Roman Tabile of Seton Catholic in 1:31 in his opening match. In the wrestlebacks, he received a bye before being eliminated by Xavier Cardona of Omak, who pinned him in 2:52.
