TACOMA - Cheney's Trenton Moore made a move at Mat Classic XXXV last weekend, but it was not exactly where he wanted to be.
A sixth-place finisher in 2023, Moore battled some high-end competition ending up fifth at 175-pounds, topping Mead's Caden Brooks, 8-2.
Along the way Moore lost to the eventual third-place finisher, Ever Yamada (Edmonds-Woodway) 10-5 and fourth-place Garrett Goade (Bainbridge).
"One-hundred seventy-five pounds was a strong bracket and second- to fifth-place were very evenly matched," Coach Brian Skaff wrote in an email.
Mason Bennett (144) was making his first trip to the Tacoma Dome and earned a spot on the podium finishing seventh.
Bennett lost his first match but came back with wins over opponents from Mead and Ballard. He lost to eventual third-place finisher, Tyson Ramsey from Ridgeline, but captured his final victory with a 12-6 decision over Chase Deberry from Arlington.
Another Mat Classic first-timer, Camron "C.J." Bogle, opened at 132 pounds with a pin, claimed other wins in overtime and by pin before dropping his seventh-place match to finish one win away from the Top 8 and a medal.
"Wyatt Wells (175) did not get in as an alternate but made the trip and is eager to compete at state tournament next year," Skaff said.
Cheney finished with 29 points and in 29th-place out of 76 teams. The Greater Spokane League's Mead Panthers 272.5 points earned them a third consecutive 3A state title.
To help illustrate how tough the GSL is in wrestling, Skaff pointed out that of the 28 wrestlers in the 3A finals, 10 were from the region and out of the 14 3A champions, five were from the GSL.
