CASHMERE — The stellar career of Charde Luat and the season for the Medical Lake girls basketball team came to an end Feb. 17 at Cashmere, where the Bulldogs blew past the Cardinals 53-32 in a state 1A play-in game.
“We didn’t respond like our season was on the line, Cashmere did, and I give them props for that,” Cardinal Coach Yeta Holloway wrote in an email.
Cashmere (18-5) and the Caribou Trail regular season champions used a big second half to erase a 21-17 Medical Lake lead.
The home team outscored the Cardinals 16-2 in the third quarter to separate themselves. A 20-9 fourth made sure Medical Lake (14-11) never could close the gap.
Knowing that how goes Luat so goes her team, Cashmere double-teamed her in the first half limiting Luat to just seven points. Delaney Gunther and Baylee Bahr each had six points.
Medical Lake was without Chiche Okembgo, also a member of Medical Lake’s band and was at an event in Yakima. “She would’ve made a difference,” Holloway said.
