SPOKANE VALLEY — Detectives are asking for the public’s help with the investigation of a single-vehicle crash, of a possible kidnapping and attempted rape of a teenage girl.
At about 6:30 a.m. Feb. 11, law enforcement officers responded to a report of a crash and an overturned vehicle on North Wood Road, north of West Coulee Hite Road.
An injured 17-year-old girl who didn’t speak English was found at the scene, records show. She was transported to an area hospital, where she told staff, through an interpreter, a man had attempted to sexually assault her.
The man was described as 6-foot tall, with long brunette hair. He was wearing black pants, a black shirt and a black face covering, as well as a hat, records show.
The girl — whose identity is protected by state law because she’s a juvenile sex-crime victim — had been waiting in her 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer, when man approached and threatened to shoot her, records show.
The suspect tied her up with rope, stole her 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer and sped off with her, records show. But he crashed near the intersection of Coulee Hite and Wood Roads.
The girl was knocked unconscious, records show. When she awoke in the morning the man was gone.
Records show the girl was in a vehicle stopped for suspected drunken driving earlier that morning, at about 12:15 a.m.
The driver, a man, was arrested and allowed to call a friend to pickup the Trailblazer and the girl, records show. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office failed to release the driver’s name, even though he was arrested and his name is public record.
He was booked into the Spokane County Jail at about 1:30 a.m. that morning.
