Plans for new pool unveiled

CHENEY – Residents and officials were presented with plans for the proposed Cheney Aquatic Center during the Feb. 13 City Council meeting.

City Public Works Director Todd Ableman took the stage to detail the project's timeline, design features and other considerations.

The Cheney Aquatic Center is poised to become a centerpiece of recreational activity in the area, he said, outlining a comprehensive timeline that highlights milestones in the development:

• December: Schematic design phase

• January: Design development

• Feb. 15: 50% Construction drawing completion

• March 5: Conditional-use hearing

• March 15: 85% Construction drawing completion

When complete, the facility will boast an array of amenities, including lap and recreational pools and a 5,000-square-foot pool house featuring a 500-square-foot community room, he said. Among the standout features are water slides, a basketball hoop and a climbing wall, promising fun and excitement for visitors of all ages.

Ableman emphasized the center's commitment to sustainability, with zeroscape and xeriscape landscaping, as well as regenerative media pool filtration - a state-of-the-art system designed to ensure water quality and efficiency.

During the presentation, Ableman addressed concerns about parking and access, proposing innovative solutions such as utilizing nearby school parking during the summer months and closing off streets to create additional parking spaces.

Council members engaged in a lively discussion about the choice of construction materials for the pools, weighing the pros and cons of stainless steel versus concrete.

Stainless steel, though initially more expensive, offers long-term benefits such as reduced labor costs and improved durability, a point underscored by Ableman.

Councilwoman Jacquelyn Belock raised questions about accessibility and parking, prompting discussion on adding more parking spaces near the entrance and drop-off area.

The presentation also delved into technical aspects, such as the 25-year warranty on PVC liners and the assembly process for stainless steel pools.

Myrtha, the company behind the stainless steel pools, impressed with its efficiency and quality standards, Ableman said.
