Two Cardinals head to state

QUINCY – Two Medical Lake boys qualified for the state Mat Classic tournament after placing in the Top 4 at regionals Feb. 10.

Wrestling at 215, True Cole brought home a third-place finish to qualify. And at 157, Carsen Buenzli finished fourth to secure the final spot.

Cole's regionals saw him with pins over Lizando Sanchez of Cashmere in 49 seconds, D.J. Frerks of Quincy in 1:46 and Brady Martin of Riverside (Nine Mile Falls) in 2:49.

His only lost was in the semifinals, where he was pinned by Xavier Cardona of Omak in 1:53.

Buenzli was pinned in his opening match in 39 seconds by Hugh Wheeler of Cashmere.

In the wrestlebacks, he won by forfeit over Hunter Gleave of Colville and then pinned Maddoc Finch of Chelan in 1:28.

In the match for third-place, he was pinned by Anthony Hyatt of Newport in 38 seconds.

Cardinal Liam Horn is alternate to state after finishing fifth at 126 pounds.

At regionals, Horn lost his opener in a 11-4 decision to Damian Sandoval of Cascade and then pinned Eli Schweiger of Freeman in 2:43. He then was pinned by Asher Greenhagen of Colville in 3:35 and finished out with an injury default victory over Jace Reyes of Quincy to win fifth.

The Cardinals also had two sixth-place finishers – Tayden Tonasket at 120 and Ethan Bales at 190.

Tonasket lost a 16-9 decisiion to Angel Sandoval of Cascade (Leavenworth) to open regional wrestling and then pinned Hunter Cole of Riverside in 1:41 in his first wrestleback match. He was disqualified in his next match against Michael Nelson of Newport. With disqualification, he was also out of the match for fifth-place, which went to Cruz Martinez of Cascade.

Bales was pinned in his opening match in 1:48 by Ian Garzon-Lopez of Cashmere. In the wrestlebacks, he pinned Zennon Cores of Cashmere in 1:58 before being pinned by Alejandro Barahas of Quincy in 3:42. In the match for fifth, he was pinned by Dillon Marenth of Deer Park in 1:21 to finish sixth.
