Cheney boys advance to Mat Classic

TACOMA – Cheney will send four wrestlers to Mat Classic XXXV in Tacoma this weekend, including one individual champion following 3A Region 4 competition Feb. 9-10 at University High School in Spokane.

Topping the list is Trenton Moore who captured the 175-pound title and looks to improve on his 2023 trip to Tacoma where he was sixth.

Mason Bennett participated in his first state competition last year as an alternate, but goes this time as runner-up at 144 pounds.

C.J. Bogle, fifth at 132, and Wyatt Wells at 175 both will attend as alternates, hoping for their shots.

"Trenton Moore advanced to finals in dominant fashion and won a 4-2 decision," head Coach Brian Skaff wrote in an email. "He is just a dominant wrestler on his feet and really in all positions on the mat."

Moore moved to 41-10 on the season and won by decision over Hunter Brower of Kennewick, 4-0.

Bennett, a junior, won in sudden victory in the semi-finals over Evan Urann of Mead.

"We practice overtime situations every day in practice so we are confident when we have to go to overtime," Skaff said. "Mason has a motor and kept the pressure on and got a big takedown to advance."

Bennett lost in the finals, 10-3, to No. 2-ranked Daniel Garza of Hermiston, Ore.

Bogle won by a 4-2 decision over Ethan Boldbaatar of Bellevue. Mead's Caden Brooks also won by decision, 3-2, over Wells.

Also participating but not moving on were, Aiden Carr (120 pounds), Jacob Estock (144), Shadrach Mason (150), Gauge Seubert (190) and Macade Munro (215).

Cheney finished sixth out of 18 teams with 87 points behind team champs Mead at 404.

In 2023 Cheney was seventh as a team with three qualifiers including Moore, Joe Showalter and Daulton Taylor, the latter two graduated.

"We are looking to improve every year," Skaff said.
