After 20 years, lawmaker to move on
SPOKANE — The 5th Congressional District will have an opening next year.
Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Spokane, announced Thursday, Feb. 8, that she is not seeking re-election.
“It’s been the honor and privilege of my life to represent the people of Eastern Washington in Congress,” she said. “After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided the time has come to serve them in new ways. I will not be running for re-election to the People’s House.”
The 5th Congressional District covers Eastern Washington, including Pend Oreille, Stevens Spokane, Whitman, eastern Adams and other counties.
The longest serving Republican woman in the U.S. House of Representatives, the 54-year-old McMorris Rodgers has spent most of her adult life in politics.
In 1991, she was hired by state Rep. Bob Morton, R-Orient, as his legislative assistant When he was appointed to the state Senate, McMorris Rodgers took his seat in the state House, serving from 1994 to 2004.
She then ran for congress, won election and has become one of the most senior Republicans in the House.
McMorris Rodgers credited her staff for being “the best staff on my team.”
She also credited her husband, Brian Rodgers, for making it possible to be a congresswoman during tumultuous times.
“Brian is my wise and faithful counselor, the one to wipe the tears from my eyes and send me back into the arena,” she said.
Together, they have three children — Cole, Grace and Brynn.
“Brian, Cole, Grace, and Brynn give me strength and courage to give it my best every day,” she said, adding, “My family has been in my corner from the start. My brother quit his job to run my first campaign. My dad covered every road in Eastern Washington with campaign signs. My mom has been my greatest encourager and fiercest defender. I couldn’t have served so well without their love, support and patience.”
McMorris Rodgers didn’t say what she’s going to do after her term ends. But she plans to pray a lot about the future and our nation.
“Every day, my No. 1 priority is to pray. I pray that God’s purpose over my life will be more deeply rooted in my heart and in gratitude for the remarkable colleagues and people,” she said.
As of press time, no candidate has announced their intent publicly to run for the seat to be vacated by McMorris Rodgers.
