Highs and lows for Cheney girls

CHENEY — The Cheney girls’ basketball team remained winless in Greater Spokane League play following losses on the road last week to Ridgeline and Mt. Spokane.

The Blackhawks’ streak increased to seven following setbacks to Ridgeline, 49-26 on Jan. 23 and 42-29 to Mt. Spokane, Jan. 25.

“This last week of basketball brings with it more highs and lows, similar to how our entire season has played out so far,” head coach Meredith Richards wrote in an email.

While not winning many wars, Cheney did capture a few battles last week, Richards pointed out.

“Defensively our girls are stepping up playing much tougher than we did at the beginning of the season,” she said.

“Sarah Hanson and Kayelee Kohlman were key in this defensive effort,” Richards said.

Friday at Mt Spokane was a game that looked to be very evenly matched on paper, Richards said.

“We were able to win two out of the four quarters on the scoreboard and play the toughest defense I’ve see the girls play this season, but it just wasn’t enough to pull out a win,” Richards said.

Cheney (0-7 GSL, 3-14 overall) discovered its offense a bit too late against Mt. Spokane (2-5, 4-13), scoring just eight points in the middle quarters. The teams were tied 9-9 after one quarter before the Wildcats’ 14-4 advantage in the second became somewhat decisive.

Macey Richards scored 10 points to lead the Blackhawks.

Cheney hung with Ridgeline (4-2, 9-7) for a quarter before the Falcons 14-7 second quarter and 10-4 third made any comeback unlikely.

Macey and Natalie Richards scored 9 and 8 points, respectively for the Blackhawks.

“No matter how well you play on defense, you still need to put points up on the board,” Richards said. “We seem to consistently have one or two quarters a game scoring only two to four points and that creates a significant challenge in getting wins.”
