The Cheney boys’ basketball team found itself on the disappointing side of a pair of Greater Spokane League basketball games last week.

The Blackhawks watched as Mead’s Bryce Lynd hit a game-winning 3-pointer in a 71-68 loss Jan. 16 and then Lewis and Clark’s third quarter turned things in the Tigers 68-60 overtime victory, Jan. 19.

“I was proud of how we fought ‘til the end and sometimes you’re on the wrong side of a buzzer beater, give credit to Mead for hitting some big shots,” head coach Travis Peevey wrote in an email.

Cheney (2-3 GSL, 7-8 overall) led 39-30 at halftime, but Mead flipped the script in the second half for the win with a 38-29 edge.

“We executed the game plan well enough to have a chance to win but had some lapses down the stretch that cost us,” Peevey said.

Once again, Evan Stinson led Cheney with 27 points with Grayson Burton (13) and Liam Carver (10) also in double figures.

LC help a 30-29 lead at the half but their 18-11 edge in the third was the difference.

“We stuck to our plan and did some things really well, but we need to improve at finishing games,” Peevey said.

The Blackhawks trailed with a minute left when Juleon Horyst hit a clutch pull up jumper and Burton hit a big shot to force OT.

Evan Stinson scored 31 points for Cheney while Carver added 10.

Cheney was at Ridgeline (2-3, 11-4) on Jan. 23 and at Mt. Spokane (5-0, 13-2), Jan. 26 before the Jan. 31 “Railroad Rumble” rivalry game, Jan. 31 at Eastern Washington University vs. 2A Rogers (2-1, 8-3) at 7:30 p.m.
