CHENEY – Girls basketball had yet another tall task in its Greater Spokane League schedule last week.

The Blackhawks finished their run through the top four teams in the league with losses Jan. 16 to Mead 67-31 and Lewis and Clark 46-33 on Jan. 19. Combined those teams are 47-14.

Against LC (3-1 GSL, 9-6 overall), Cheney got off to a good start, leading 23-17 at halftime but came out of the break to watch the Tigers win the quarter 20-4.

“The girls put together the best two quarters of play I’ve seen from them this year in the first half,” head coach Meredith Richards wrote in an email.

Then came that disastrous third quarter.

“Our shots were dropping and the girls were attacking the basket well,” Richards said. “They seemed ready to attack some more coming out of half time and we just fell flat.”

Kiah Klauss led Cheney in scoring again with eight points, followed by Macey Richards, Natalie Richards and Mia Ashcroft with six each.

Cheney and LC played in an earlier non-league game won by the Tigers 43-30.

Mead is the No. 1 ranked team in the state and showed why zooming to a 46-13 lead by halftime.

“Their press was a lot for our young ball handlers to handle and it got us into trouble early,” Richards explained, adding, “We settled a little and started to take care of the ball better but couldn’t recover.”

Klauss finished the game with the team high of eight points.

Five regular season games remain for the Blackhawks, including Jan. 31 at Eastern Washington University in the “Railroad Rumble” rivalry game with Rogers. The girls tip off at 5:30 p.m.
