AIRWAY HEIGHTS – In a move towards environmental sustainability, the Airway Heights City Council has officially accepted a climate change grant from the Chamber of Commerce, totaling an impressive $500,000 as of January 22.
Heather Trautman, addressing the council, expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact of the grant, stating, “There are several elements that have to do with climate change and greenhouse gas reduction.”
The grant, to be disbursed over multiple phases, will commence with a contract extending from the present until the middle of 2025, providing essential funding of approximately $230,000. Trautman emphasized the inclusive approach the council intends to take, announcing, “The proposal is to have a citizen advisory committee to help us decide what to do.”
Acknowledging the ongoing nature of the effort, Trautman added, “It won’t be a one-time effort; it will be a committee that continuously advises us. It needs to be a very diverse group; we can’t ignore the people in our community that are the most affected.”
“In five years we get to show whether these strategies are working or not,” said Trautman. “We’ll also be required to look at impact of smoke and fire, we need the community to help us when it comes to that.”
