CHENEY – The Blackhawks collected a big Greater Spokane League boys' basketball win on the road last week after losing its home meeting with Gonzaga Prep.
The Blackhawks opened with a 71-59 loss to the Bullpups on Jan. 9 before topping the Bears 57-52 Jan. 12 with their scoring leader, Evan Stinson, out of the lineup.
Cheney built at 30-23 halftime lead that held up throughout the remainder of the contest.
"We knew that we could not overlook them and playing without Evan was going to be different," head Coach Travis Peevey wrote in an email. "We had other guys step up in his absence but honestly, I was not surprised."
Grayson Burton's 21 points - with six rebounds and as many assists - led the Blackhawks while Liam Carver added 19 more. Connor Magalsky toyed with a double-double scoring eight and pulling down eight rebounds.
Against G-Prep, Cheney was not able to cut into the 43-30 lead the Bullpups (1-1, 9-4) manufactured in the first half.
"We allowed G-Prep to outwork us in the first half and it proved to be the difference," Peevey said.
Cheney tightened things in the second half, Peevey said. "We came out for the second half with energy and fight, we cut the lead down to a two-possession game and did some really good things."
Stinson dished out his usual big numbers, 27 points, but had an assist from Burton who added 12.
Cheney played at Mead (0-2, 6-6) Jan. 16 and returns home to face Lewis and Clark (1-1, 8-4) on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.
