Buenzli leads Cardinals at Blackhawk Invite

CHENEY – Three area wrestlers took home silver medals from the Blackhawk Invite on Jan. 6.

For Medical Lake, Carsen Buenzli was the runner-up at 150 pounds.

For Cheney, Cameron Bogle won silver at 132 and Shadrach Mason was second at 144.

Buenzli lost in the final round to Shadle Park's Tyrese Guzman who improved to 22-2 on the season after a fall in 2 minutes, 44 seconds.

The Cardinals other notable finisher was Hudson Raulston who claimed third place at 126 in a sudden victory over Aiden Badoni from Wapato.

True Cole battled back to win his consolation round at 215 pounds against Javen Johnson-Cuello from Kennewick via fall in 1:25.

For Cheney, Bogle improved to 17-6 on the season, but lost in the finals at 132 pounds to Raul Sanchez III of Wapato by decision, 11-7.

Mason, wrestling at 144 pounds, lost in his final; he was pinned in 2:34 by Myles Christen of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls).

The Blackhawks' Ashton Shepard topped Kadyn Norris from Lewis and Clark by fall in 1:49 for a third place.

Cooper French (165) and Trenton Moore (175) each claimed a fourth place finish.

Wapato won the team title with 227.5 points; Cheney was seventh with 116 and Medical Lake was 13th with 86.0.

Cheney duels

The Jan. 6 tournament concluded a week for Cheney that also included a pair of Greater Spokane League in which Cheney lost to University, 36-31, on Jan. 3.

The Blackhawks then defeated Lewis and Clark, 46-27, on Jan. 4.

In a night of streaks, the Titans opened with a pair of wins before Trenton Moore (175 pounds) and Gauge Seubert (190) helped trim the lead to 11-9.

U-Hi won five of the next six bouts and lead 36-9 before Cheney's Bogle, Ashton Shepard (138), Shadrach Mason (144) and Mason Bennett (155) helped the Blackhawks rally.

Cheney and Lewis and Clark battled through eight weight classes with the Tigers holding onto a 24-21 lead after winning at 126 pounds. Blackhawk wins came from Wyatt Wells (175), Alex Kurakin (106), Juan Tercero (113), Cacee Gray (120) and Bogle were all winners.

The Blackhawks won five of the next six as Bogle, Mason, Mason Bennett (150), Jacob Estock (157) and Stevie Rasmussen (165) were winners for Cheney that outscored LC 25-3 down the stretch.

Cheney toned down the hectic schedule with just one match at North Central in Spokane on Jan. 10.
