AIRWAY HEIGHTS – On Christmas Eve, officer Bryant Baker went around several neighborhoods and knocked on the door of all the houses with a package outside.
He made sure residents had their package by either giving it to them directly if they answered the door.
If they didn’t answer, he would hide the package where a porch pirate couldn’t see it.
Porch piracy is a major concern for the city, with five packages being reported stolen since Nov. 1, records show.
“It looks like a lot more than that’s happening, and I believe it is, but there are some cases where it’s not being reported,” Lt. Jake Kieth said. “It may be lower this year because our officers were very pro-active this year, and making sure that residents know they have a package.
“That’s worked out pretty well.”
When asked about how residents can avoid having their packages stolen, Kieth said:
“Just getting your packages collected and inside the house as quickly as possible. Check your notifications for deliveries, and maybe get a neighbor you know and trust to grab your package for you. Be a good neighbor and help each other out.”
Residents should consider adding security and other cameras to monitor front porches, he said.
