Cardinal boys lose two

Tri-Cities Prep, East Valley top Medical Lake

SPOKANE VALLEY - The Medical Lake boys basketball team wrapped up non-league play at the West Valley Eagle Classic last week with a pair of losses.

The Cardinals opened Dec. 28 with an 83-50 loss to the state's No. 5-ranked 2B school, Tri Cities Prep, then fell to the Greater Spokane League 2A's East Valley, 51-49 the following day.

"I actually thought we did some great things that day, just couldn't sustain it," Coach Brett Ward said about Tri-Cities Prep game.

After falling behind 24-13 in the opening quarter, Medical Lake, trailing by as many as 20 points, cut the deficit to 44-34 with 6:03 to go in the third quarter.

Tri-Cities then went on a 21-2 run and effectively sealed the win.

Maverick Rasmussen led the Cardinals with 11 points.

Against East Valley, Medical Lake led 23-11 at halftime, but the Knights erupted with a 28-7 edge in the third quarter to take a 39-30 lead.

Medical Lake would have a good finish, but not good enough, Ward said. The Cardinals saw a 6-point lead slip away in the final half-minute.

"(We're) just a team still learning how to win," Ward said.

Rasmussen was again the offensive force for Medical Lake with 24 points.

Medical Lake (1-0 NEA, 2-7 overall) resumed Northeast A League play Jan. 3 at Riverside (2-0, 6-3). The Cardinals were then scheduled to travel to Colville (0-2, 0-9) Jan. 6.
