Cardinals compete in Newport JV tournament

NEWPORT - Ian Steege brought home a silver medal Saturday, Dec. 16, from the Newport JV tournament.

Wrestling at 190 pounds, he opened by pinning Lincoln Koyama of Ferris in 1:11 and then Payton Hauser-Plumb of Hanford in 48 seconds. In his third bout, he won by medical forfeit over teammate Ivan Rolle of Medical Lake.

In his fourth match, he lost by technical fall, 24-9 in 4:00) to Dillon Mareth of Deer Park.

He then pinned teammate Ethan Bales of Medical Lake in 2:21 in his final bout.

Bales took fourth in the weight class, opening with a fall in 1:13 over teammate Rolle, then a loss by fall to Koyama in 1:05.

In the third round, he lost by pin to Mareth in 2:17, before pinning Hauser-Plumb in 1:10.

He lost his final match to Steege.

Rolle was sixth in the class. He opened with a loss to Bales, then was pinned by Mareth in 1:52. Due to an injury, he medical forfeited to Steege, Koyama and Hauser-Plum.

Medical Lake had two grapplers in the 157 pound class -- Michael Keister and Halen Nelson.

Nelson lost to Henry Ochoa of Hanford by pin in 3:31 and then was pinned by Truce Ugartechea of Newport in 4:34.

Keister opened with a loss by pin to Josh Holland of Hanford then pinned Noah Shahan of Hanford in 18 seconds. He then lost a major decision, 13-5, to Ochoa.

Medical Lake only had one other wrestler competing - Garret Bilbo at 160.

Bilbo was pinned by Mason Frye of Deer Park in 46 seconds in his opening match.

He then received a bye before being pinned by Wiley Young-Dougherty of Deer Park in 1:03.
